AYFER ORHAN – “I SUPPORT ACTION ON HOUSING”
Ayfer Orhan,* Labour’s Parliamentary Spokesperson for Hemel Hempstead, welcomes Government help, particularly for first-time buyers, as Tories reveal offer of Tax Break that will most benefit the wealthy few.
Ayfer Orhan has welcomed the Government’s announcement that a Stamp Duty holiday has been put in place on all homes bought for under £175,000 for a period of 12 months from 3rd September this year - that should make half of all house purchases across the country exempt from Stamp Duty.
The Stamp Duty suspension came as part of a £1 Billion Homeowners Support Package which will also offer some 10,000 people the chance to get on the housing ladder by extending Shared-Equity schemes. The Government has further announced support for families struggling to pay their mortgages or who are facing repossession.
Ayfer said:
“Although the changes to the housing market are caused by global factors, Labour will make sure that people still get the support they need here in Hemel Hempstead.
The Government is working hard to help ordinary families through this world-wide economic slowdown, yet, in these critical times, the Tories have shown their true colours by revealing that they would propose a tax break that would give most benefit to couples who inherit estates worth up to £2 Million. Well, I know that there are a good many people living in Hemel Hempstead who do not own homes worth £2 Million! So how relevant is their tax cut to the rich for the majority of people here I have yet to understand!
I’m glad that Labour will continue to take the big decisions that will help ordinary people in Hemel Hempstead. The Tories remain the same as they have always been – only looking out for the very rich and doing nothing to help hard-working families in these difficult times.”
“Having spoken to a large number of families trying to get a home of their own here in Hemel Hempstead, I know how difficult it is for someone on a low income to even get into the mortgage market let alone, find that crucial deposit. That is why I welcome the help the Government is providing, especially for those families finding it difficult to keep up with their mortgage, and will gladly provide further information to those who would like to know more.”
“We (Labour) must never become complacent and must continue to find ways of helping even more people. That is why I am keen for the Government to do more to help those hard working people who want to buy their own home and will be campaigning hard to that end.”
