ANGER AT
‘DOUBLE STANDARDS’ ON ENERGY CHARGES
Energy
companies that charge higher rates to customers who use pre-pay
meters are hurting the poorest in our community exclaims an angry
Ayfer Orhan.
Following
recent announcements of ever-increasing profits, Labour’s
Parliamentary Spokesperson for Hemel Hempstead, Ayfer Orhan, has
launched a scathing attack on rich energy companies for a practice
that is seen to be grossly unfair.
“Paying more
when using a pre-pay meter is a rip-off” she said – “I intend
campaigning on this unjust practice until I get it
stopped.”
Ayfer will be
writing to energy companies demanding that they put a stop to this
double standard in pricing and will keep up the pressure until it
is brought to an end. She will also be writing to Energy Minister,
Malcolm Wicks, to ask for his support.
“People using
pre-pay meters are usually some of the poorest in our community and
are, to all intents and purposes, paying for their energy usage up
front. At a time when energy companies are continuing to make huge
profits on the back of ever-increasing prices, some of our most
vulnerable people are punished with higher energy prices more than
any other consumer – not only unfair but extremely damaging to
families and others who already find it difficult to
manage.”
Ayfer invites
people to contact Labour’s Action Centre 01442 300 300 in
order to share with her their views and experience on this
issue.
