Labour Wants Birthing Unit to Deliver

HEMEL HEMPSTEAD LABOUR PARTY

LABOUR WANTS BIRTHING UNIT TO DELIVER

Begins

HEMEL hospital’s birthing unit should re-open – that’s the view of Labour’s parliamentary candidate Ayfer Orhan.

The mum-of-two has backed a detailed 850 word response to the consultation on the possible return of the unit submitted by Hemel Hempstead Labour Party last week.

West Herts Primary Care Trust closed the award-winning birth unit "temporarily" back in 2005 on cost and staffing grounds and health bosses decided to close it permanently earlier this year.

Mrs Orhan said; "I have gone into this in great depth and what’s happened at Hemel is a crying shame. A local birthing unit can be made to work – a bit like child birth itself - it simply requires a bit of pushing and determination."

Mrs Orhan said she "fully supported" calls from the Hospital Action Group to re-open the unit which costs £445,000 a year to run and was critical of health bosses, who she said, were "more interested in the balance sheet than bed sheets."

Local Liberal Democrats who have publicly opposed re-opening the unit also incurred Mrs Orhan’s wrath; "The Lib Dems have failed everyone. Their response to the consultation is to throw the baby out with the bathwater and shows yet again just why they are not fit to run the country," she stormed.
