HEMEL HEMPSTEAD LABOUR PARTY LABOUR WANTS BIRTHING UNIT TO DELIVER Begins HEMEL hospital’s birthing unit should re-open – that’s the view of Labour’s parliamentary candidate Ayfer Orhan. The mum-of-two has backed a detailed 850 word response to the consultation on the possible return of the unit submitted by Hemel Hempstead Labour Party last week. West Herts Primary Care Trust closed the award-winning birth unit "temporarily" back in 2005 on cost and staffing grounds and health bosses decided to close it permanently earlier this year. Mrs Orhan said; "I have gone into this in great depth and what’s happened...

Conservative-run Dacorum had planned to ballot tenants in March on the move and was urging a “yes” vote to rid itself of responsibility for the housing stock and transfer it to a new housing association style “Community Gateway.” However Housing Minister John Healy announced to Parliament last Wednesday that in February the government would be spelling out...

Council Housing Finance Statement from Rt Hon John Healy MP - Minister for Housing Local authorities provide around two million rented homes and, together with housing associations, they provide decent, secure and affordable accommodation for over eight million people. Housing suffered a long period of severe neglect. In 1997 there was a £19bn backlog of repairs to four million council and housing association homes and more than two million homes were below basic decency standards. Over £33bn has been invested in improving those homes and by the end of 2010 we expect around 95 per cent of council and housing...

Tenants had originally been due to vote on the move in November. However, the decision was postponed until January and has now been put on hold until at least March. The disarray stems from an report by independent experts valuing the council’s existing homes at £70 million instead of £120 million meaning the council will be unable to reap the financial windfall it was expecting. ‘DOUBLE STANDARDS’ ON ENERGY CHARGES

Energy
companies that charge higher rates to customers who use pre-pay
meters are hurting the poorest in our community exclaims an angry
Ayfer Orhan.

Following
recent announcements of ever-increasing profits, Labour’s
Parliamentary Spokesperson for Hemel Hempstead, Ayfer Orhan, has
launched a scathing attack on rich energy companies for a practice
that is seen to be grossly unfair.

“Paying more
when using a pre-pay meter is a rip-off” she said – “I intend
campaigning on this unjust practice until I get it
stopped.”

Ayfer will be
writing to energy companies demanding that they put a stop to this
double standard in pricing and will keep up...

However, far from the short-sighted NIMBY attitude that many locally-elected Tory representatives have taken, I was struck by how worried parents are that their children won’t be able to afford to live in the town if more affordable housing isn’t made available. I share their concern. But I also believe that Hemel Hempstead needs more than just affordable housing if it is to prosper in the...
